Emerald Sun

Featured teacher of the month!

Meet Emerald! After completing her ARCT in piano and Grade 10 saxophone from the RCM system, she went on to pursue a BMus in Clarinet Performance, Composition and Music Theory at the Schulich School of Music at McGill University.  As a recipient of the DAAD scholarship, she later received her MMus in Clarinet Performance at the Trossingen Hochschule für Musik in Germany under the tutelage of internationally acclaimed virtuoso Chen Halevi.

An active performer, Emerald debuted as a soloist with the Toronto Sinfonietta.  She has been invited to music festivals within Canada and internationally such as the Schloss Pommersfelden Music Festival in Germany where she was a featured soloist.  A lover of chamber music, she has collaborated with distinguished artists in Europe such as Márta Gulyás, Jürgen Weber and Benjamin Dieltjens.  As an orchestral musician, she has served as the acting principal clarinettist of Sichuan Symphony Orchestra and has toured and performed with orchestras from Canada, Germany, Belgium and China in renowned venues such as Carnegie Hall, Roy Thomson Hall, Maison Symphonique, National Arts Centre Ottawa, Koningin Elisabethzaal Antwerp, Liederhalle Stuttgart, Shanghai Concert Hall and Chengdu City Music Hall.

Emerald has taught for years students of all ages both in Canada and abroad. Aside from English, she speaks Mandarin, German and French. Her unique approach combines North American and European pedagogy and focuses on correct body use, musical understanding and having fun!

Snow Days - In the event of inclement weather The Song Spot presents the following policy. If the Durham District School Board or Durham Catholic District School Board buses are cancelled students are welcome to email into the lesson department no later than 12 noon that day to cancel their lesson and avoid a charge; requests for cancellations after this time will not be allowed without charge.

The Song Spot does not offer compensatory lessons or classes for absences and/or missed lessons that occur because students have conflicts, travel out of town, etc. or due to illness. This is in respect for our faculty members, who set aside a specific time for each student. This time is reserved. The teacher cannot give the time away to someone else or fill it again – thus s/he does not have the opportunity to make up the lost income. Though many students and families are consistent and reliable about attendance, some are not; this policy is a way to support our talented faculty.

24 hours notice via email is necessary to receive no charge for a private lesson. If your child is ill in the morning before their lesson please email before noon. Same day late cancellations and  no shows will be charged a full lesson fee.
