Theory Courses

This course is designed for musicians wishing to pursue music in post-secondary education or kids who are beginning to play or sing from the RCM Repertoire in their lessons.  In this class we will cover the coursework from prep up to Level 5.

The Elementary levels of the Theory Syllabus, 2016 Edition provides a well-sequenced approach to learning theory. Incorporating theory into practical lessons at the elementary levels will help to ensure student success on the first required written examination. Our course will cover beginner theory from Prep to Level 5 and the advanced theory from Level 6 to Level 8.

Although, the school board music covers a lot of theory topics, they do not cover a lot of rhythm, rudiments and harmony that RCM students require to receive their grade certificates. Our group classes that will cover some of what the students may already know (review) but also teach theory topics that they do not cover or need more understanding/comprehension from regular school music classes.

Additionally, students in this course will have more time to spend on their technique and performance of their actual instrument in their private lessons rather than theory.

Snow Days - In the event of inclement weather The Song Spot presents the following policy. If the Durham District School Board or Durham Catholic District School Board buses are cancelled students are welcome to email into the lesson department no later than 12 noon that day to cancel their lesson and avoid a charge; requests for cancellations after this time will not be allowed without charge.

The Song Spot does not offer compensatory lessons or classes for absences and/or missed lessons that occur because students have conflicts, travel out of town, etc. or due to illness. This is in respect for our faculty members, who set aside a specific time for each student. This time is reserved. The teacher cannot give the time away to someone else or fill it again – thus s/he does not have the opportunity to make up the lost income. Though many students and families are consistent and reliable about attendance, some are not; this policy is a way to support our talented faculty.

24 hours notice via email is necessary to receive no charge for a private lesson. If your child is ill in the morning before their lesson please email before noon. Same day late cancellations and  no shows will be charged a full lesson fee.
